My sole purpose in life is to please others. Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating. I'm not a masochist. My sole purpose in life is to find joy only for myself. That sounds wrong, too. I'm not a hedonist either. Hm. What's a better way to phrase things? The reason I am living is to further myself in the quest for happiness, whether for myself or for others. Not the best way to phrase things, but it'll do.
Have you taken your happy pills today?
Happiness is so often sought by, well, everyone in the world, that sometimes, we don't realize it when it comes. Personally, I do not agree with people who insist that happiness is hard to find, for truly, happiness can be achieved through the smallest of things. Before we delve into this, what is happiness anyway? According to the dictionary, it is good fortune, pleasure, contentment, and joy. But, really, is there a specific definition of happiness?
In this world, few things are absolute. Everything is relative to a specific person, just as happiness can be one thing for some people and another thing for others. But where do we draw the line between happiness and just plain search for well, shallow pleasure, as some may put it? The point is, true happiness stays. If not for a long period of time, then the memory of it is enough to put a warm, tingly feeling in your stomach, to put it in a cheesy way. It makes you feel..fulfilled, whether it is by accomplishing something or by making someone happy, or by even just watching the merry sunshine dance with the elements.
Happiness is something to be enjoyed. What do I mean by that? It's something to be felt--and felt often. It is something to be believed in. Most importantly, it is something to be shared. Some people may say that happiness is a proportionate thing, much like Science's beloved Law of Conservation of Masses. But, I think, that happiness is an emotion much like love. It is something to be given, not to be taken away, but for it to furthermore increase. Because, happiness is like a disease in one way--it's contagious. How many times have you started laughing in a silent room, only for your friends or classmates to join in? How many times have you smiled at a random person, only for them to smile back? How many times has a baby cooed and gurgled, with you smiling indulgently at him/her?
I believe that there is joy to be found in almost everything. Yeah, sometimes the things we find happiness in also hurt us, but it's a risk we take in living. It's a lesson we learn in being, that the ultimate fulfillment of happiness is when we finally realize its value-and our gravitation towards it.
I'm giving you the challenge to be that person who makes happiness a daily habit.
For your happiness is also mine.:)
Good evening and a pleasant rest-of-your life to you.
